POST-GRADUATION WORK PERMIT (PGWP) CANADA
POST-GRADUATION WORK PERMIT (PGWP)
Are you a recent graduate looking for some valuable work experience in Canada? The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) could be your ideal pathway.
The PGWP allows foreign students who have completed a program of study at an authorized learning institution (DLI) in Canada to work in the country. This work experience can help you achieve valuable skills, potentially leading to permanent residency.
The permit is designed for recent graduates who wish to apply their education to a Canadian work environment. Depending on specific cases, the validity of PGWPs extends from eight months to three years.
PGWP – CREATES OPPORTUNITIES
The PGWP program is designed for eligible graduates to work in Canada without a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). It provides flexibility in terms of employment and work location.
Graduates can work full-time or part-time for any employer across Canada. The PGWP is intended to support Canada’s commitment to attracting and retaining global talent and contributing to a diverse and skilled workforce.
Eligibility criteria: Starting September 2024, PGWP applicants must:
- Stay in Canada for the complete duration of their studies
- Attend at least 50 percent of their program in class and meet all other PGWP requirements.
- In-class options include in-person, hybrid, and flexible courses.
- For flexible courses, applicants must plan to attend their classes on campus.
From September 1, 2024, time spent studying outside Canada will be deducted from the length of the student’s PGWP.

PGWP PERMIT Essentials
The duration of a PGWP varies based on the length of the completed program of study. Generally, permits are issued for up to the same length as the program, up to a maximum of 3 years.
Participants may only receive one PGWP in their lifetime. However, the experience gained through the PGWP can enhance career prospects and support an application for permanent residency.
Key Points:
- Permits reflect the length of the study program, up to 3 years.
- Eligible graduates can work in any job and for any employer in Canada.
- The permit supports the transition from being a student to a professional.
