WORK PERMIT IN CANADA
You will need Form BSF186 or the Personal Effects Accounting Document (PEAD) for a work permit in Canada. It documents personal items imported into Canada. BSF186A tracks arriving items separately. Proof of settlement funds is needed if visiting under the Federal Skilled Worker or Trades Program.
You will also need:
- Canadian immigrant visa
- A Confirmation of Permanent Residence (CoPR) for each family member
- Valid passports or travel documents
- Two copies each of Forms BSF186 (B4) and BSF186A (B4A).
LMIA-EXEMPT WORK PERMIT
An LMIA-exempt work permit allows foreign workers to find employment in Canada without a Labour Market Impact Assessment. Eligibility is based on international agreements, significant benefits to Canada, or public policy considerations. Apply with the required documentation and pay applicable fees.
To get an LMIA-exempt work permit, the applicant must also:
- Provide endorsement application with needs assessment & settlement plan
- Promise to apply for permanent residence within 90 days
- Include Referral Letter, commitment form IMM 5654, and Offer of Employment Number.
- Provide police certificates and medical exam reports if needed.
OPEN WORK PERMIT
An open work permit allows you to work for any Canadian employer except those listed as ineligible or offering specific services. It doesn’t require a job offer or LMIA and is available in specific situations, like for spouses of students.

A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a mandatory document that Canadian employers must obtain to hire foreign workers. It ensures no Canadian worker is available for the job. A positive LMIA, or a confirmation letter, is essential for obtaining a work permit.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE CANADA (IEC)

The eligibility requirements are:
- Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 35.
